As of the writing of this article, there had been 3 earthquakes in the Philippines (Pampanga, Samar, and Bataan) at 6.1, 6.2 and 4.5 magnitude respectively. With this development, t is very timely to share with everyone WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF AN EARTHQUAKE.
What to do in case of an Earthquake?
The basic thing to do in case of an earthquake is to secure yourself through the DUCK/DROP- COVER – HOLD. This is the fundamental thing to do. In case you are outside, go to an open area and do the same. Cover your head with something that will protect it from any falling objects.
You might ask what if you are a PWD, what should you do? Well, it is basically the same and if you are in a wheelchair, the first thing to do is LOCK. You need to lock your wheelchair so that it will not be affected by the earthquake then it follows, COVER and HOLD.
Do not panic. It is also critical for you not to panic and to maintain a focus of mind. Things can happen very fast during an earthquake and you need to act fast as it happens. If you are calm you will know what to do and you can even save the lives of other people.
If you are inside a building the first thing to consider is which floor of the building you are on and how fast you can get out. If you are within the lower floors then it is key to find a way out in a calm manner. However, if you are on the higher floor going down might be riskier than staying, thus do the duck, cover and hold and remain in your building. It is also important to remember to stay away from furniture, windows, and lamps.
How to Respond on the Road
When you feel an earthquake and you are inside a house the immediate action should be to go to an open area or an assembly point. Keep distance from buildings, electricity wires, trees and other things that might fall or collapse.
If you are driving stop in a safe place, turn on the hazard lights and stay inside your vehicle. Protect yourself from any possible impact that might happen either from another vehicle or foreign objects.
If you are in a crowded place protect your head with your arms or take cover under seats and tables. If there is panic within your area try to be calm and instead of going with the crowd it is best to find a safe area and duck, cover, and hold until the earthquake passes.
